KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- PICOMS International University College’s teaching and learning (PdP) programmes, which were previously held face to face, have shifted almost entirely to online platforms following the outbreak of COVID-19.
PICOMS vice-chancellor-cum-chief executive officer Prof Dr Wan Mohd Azizi Wan Sulaiman said under the new normal phase of PdP, PICOMS’ students were exposed to a variety of easily accessible online systems and applications such as Google Classroom and Google Meet. “As a private institution of higher learning under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), this initiative is in line with the directive of the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) at the time. Although our students were at home, the learning programmes continue until today,” he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, Wan Mohd Azizi said of the total 3,000 applications received for the April-May intake, 400 were accepted and had registered online, while the remaining had reapplied for the July-Sept intake. He said some 3,000 PICOMS students and 200 lecturers had undergone online programmes since the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, he said the 'COVID-19 Musaadah' initiative was implemented by PICOMS to assist its students and staff who were affected by the MCO. He said under the programme, students received monthly allowances, laptops, dormitory fee exemption payment assistance, tele-counselling, food bank and bus services, while staff were given computer loans, personal loans and MCO special allowances. PICOMS deputy vice-chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohd Nazil Salleh added that before the COVID-19 pandemic, only 20 per cent of studies were conducted online. “PICOMS’ students in mid-semester were facing the final examinations when COVID-19 broke out. Each programme was changed to almost 100 per cent online, ”he said. In the meantime, he said PICOMS had provided the guidelines for student entry to campus soon. -- BERNAMA

CHONGQING, China, June 22, 2020 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/ --
June 18, 2020 marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Chongqing Liangjiang New Area. According to Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Administrative Committee, the region's GDP increased from 100.2 billion yuan to 339.1 billion yuan from 2010 to 2019, ranking 4th among China's 19 national new areas. Over the past decade, the concept of opening-up has taken a deep root in all aspects of the new area's economic and social development. In November 2019, the State Council approved the further opening-up of Guoyuan Port in Chongqing Port to make it an open area. It has grown from a storage yard on the bank of the Yangtze River to the world's "transfer hub" as well as an important physical connection point between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The story of Guoyuan Port is a good example of Chongqing's inland opening-up and participation in the global market. The convenient transportation has attracted more and more high-level projects. Building on the strategic advantages of national-level new area, the core area of China-Singapore demonstration projects and the core area of Chongqing pilot free trade zone, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area is forging ahead in reforms and speeding up the construction of four major platforms including Guoyuan Port, the bonded port area, the Jiangbeizui international financial center and the Yuelai convention and exhibition city. With the development of inland opening-up, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area has attracted more foreign investors through a series of partnership programs, such as Chongqing Liangjiang International Cooperation Center and Sino-Singapore, Sino-Germany, Sino-Switzerland, Sino-Italy, Sino-Japan and Sino-South Korea industrial parks. Now, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area is about to start its second venture. Thanks to the national strategies, such as the establishment of Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the development plan of the western region in the new era, it is striving to build an inland open portal and become an important global investment destination. Chongqing Liangjiang New Area has formed an advanced manufacturing system with four pillar industries of automobile, electronic information, equipment manufacturing and biomedicine. High-tech manufacturing accounts for 43 percent of the industrial output value. A modern service industry system, including finance, logistics, service trade, commerce, cultural tourism and exhibition as the main bodies, has been formed. The added value of the area's tertiary industry reached 231.9 billion yuan. In order to attract global talent, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area has been approved as a national innovation demonstration zone and the national entrepreneurship and innovation demonstration base. It has a number of talent recruitment platforms, including the Chongqing Liangjiang New Area overseas student pioneering park, work base for returning overseas students with the Western Returned Scholars Association, and the national offshore innovation and entrepreneurship base for overseas talents. In the future, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area will strive to build a modern industrial cluster based on electronic information and automobile, promote the strategic emerging industrial clusters focusing on health, high-end equipment, aerospace and aviation, and speed up the development of the modern service industry focusing on online services and management towards the middle and high end of the global value chain. It's time for setting sail when the tide is surging high. The comprehensive, multilevel and wide-range opening-up trend is reshaping the economic pattern of the new area. That is about to change on August 18 when the RACE Act – The Research to Accelerate Cures and Equity for Children Act – goes into effect. Passed in 2017, the RACE Act amends the existing PREA – Pediatric Research Equity Act – and eliminates the exemption from PREA requirements for cancer drugs that have orphan status. The new law requires pediatric evaluation of new drugs and biologics intended for the treatment of adult cancers and directed at a molecular target substantially relevant to the growth or progression of pediatric cancer. Clinical research companies and their pediatric research specialists, including PRA Health Sciences, will be called on to support pharmaceutical and biotech companies as they sponsor the required research for pediatric oncology indications. “We are now 60 days away from the RACE Act going into effect, which has created a scramble to develop pediatric study plans for oncology studies,” said Dr. Mark Sorrentino, VP, The Center for Pediatric Clinical Development at PRA Health Sciences. “Here at PRA, we have been preparing for the RACE Act since it was passed in 2017, so we are able to quickly and effectively support our clients and sponsors looking to conduct this research. We have brought together a highly credentialed team internally to serve as hands-on consultants in the development and execution of pediatric research plans.” PRA’s Center for Pediatric Clinical Development and the team working on the RACE Act implementation include Dr. Sorrentino as well as Dr. Martine Dehlinger-Kremer, VP, Scientific Affairs, Pediatric Subject Matter Expert; Dr. Jacqui Whiteway, Senior Pediatric Strategy Liaison; Jo Dewhurst, LLB Dip; and Missy Hansen, MSN, APRN, CNP-Pediatrics, Pediatric Strategy Liaison. Together, with the addition of dozens of other PRA researchers and pediatric specialists, this designated team of experts is ready to utilize their collective experience in pediatric clinical development to support RACE Act-focused initiatives. “Parents and pediatric oncologists need to have confidence that the therapies and treatments they are giving to their children are safe and effective for fighting cancer in pediatric patients,” Dr. Dehlinger-Kremer said. “The RACE Act is pushing all of us – drug developers, researchers, and medical care teams – to find the best treatments possible for children and their families, and to develop treatments that are specifically tailored to children.” • White Paper: Parents as Gatekeepers for Children with Cancer • Insight: The RACE Act is coming this August. Here’s what you need to know. • Video: Learn more about the RACE Act from PRA's experts. With the RACE Act going into effect, the law has caught up with the critical need for drug developers to focus on pediatric oncology. • Since 1980, only four oncology drugs were first approved for use in children² • Only 4 percent of funding spent on cancer research is directed toward childhood cancer³ • Cancer drugs approved by the FDA take a median of 6.5 years to go from first clinical trial in adults to the first trial in children⁴ • While considered a rare condition, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer each day⁵ and those patients, their families, and their medical teams need more treatments suitable for pediatric indications “From a research perspective, there is so much more we can do to improve kids’ lives,” Dr. Sorrentino said. “PRA has conducted more than 130 pediatric studies in the last five years, and our promise, to the kids and their families, is to work quickly and safely, specifically with them in mind, to develop treatment options that will be effective for our smallest patients. It’s going to take a collective team effort between drug developers and researchers – we are ready for that challenge.” For more information on the RACE Act, visit https://prahs.com/centers/the-center-for-pediatric-clinical-development/race-act.
